All Member Conversations Deserve the Right Guardrails: Not Just the Ones You Know About

It Started With a Reply-All


A member at a midsize country club hit reply-all on a group post in the club's communication tool. What started as a scheduling question turned into a heated exchange about a recent board decision. Within 24 hours, the GM had fielded four phone calls from upset members and a strongly worded message from the board president.


The instinct in that moment is understandable: pull back. Avoid giving members any kind of shared platform where that can happen again. Keep communication one-directional. Staff sends, members receive.

Clubs can configure moderation around any combination of nine content topics:
⫸ Political - Content involving political opinions, parties, candidates, or policy debates
⫸ Religious - Content referencing religious beliefs, practices, or commentary
⫸ Negative/Hostile - Content that is confrontational, aggressive, or demeaning in tone
⫸ Critical of Management/Board - Content targeting club leadership, staff, or governance decisions
⫸ Discriminatory/Hate - Content that demeans individuals or groups based on protected characteristics
⫸ Profanity/Vulgar - Content containing offensive or inappropriate language
⫸ Sexual - Content that is explicit or sexually suggestive
⫸ Commercial/Spam - Content promoting outside products, services, or solicitations
⫸ External Platform Promotion - Content directing members to competing or outside platforms


For each topic a club enables, they also choose a sensitivity level:
⫸ Low - The content must explicitly match the topic to be flagged. Clear-cut cases only.
⫸ Medium - The AI uses its judgement to evaluate context and intent, not just surface-level keywords.
⫸ High - Any mention of the topic triggers a review, regardless of context.


A club primarily concerned about overt hate speech might set Discriminatory/Hate to High while leaving Political at Low or off entirely. A club with a history of board-related tension might prioritize Critical of Management/Board at Medium. Every club configures what fits their community - there is no one-size-fits-all default.


Common Questions


Is this censorship?


It is a fair question, and it deserves a direct answer.


Censorship, in its traditional meaning, refers to a government suppressing speech. Private organizations - including clubs - have always had the right to establish community standards for their own platforms and spaces. Every club already does this in other contexts: dress codes, conduct expectations in the dining room, policies about signage on club property. Content moderation on a member platform is no different.


More importantly, moderation is not the same as silencing. A flagged post goes to a staff member for review. If it is appropriate, it gets approved and published. The goal is not to prevent members from having a voice - it is to make sure that voice is used in a way that respects all members and reflects the standards the club has established.


Members who join a private club understand, implicitly or explicitly, that they are part of a community with expectations. A well-designed content moderation policy makes those expectations transparent and consistent.


Does the club have the legal right to do this?


Yes - with the important caveat that clubs should always consult their own legal counsel for guidance specific to their situation.


Private clubs operating private platforms are not bound by First Amendment protections the way government entities are. The First Amendment restricts government censorship of speech - it does not require private organizations to publish or host any content a member chooses to post.


Clubs that offer member communication platforms typically do so under terms of use that members agree to when they access the platform. Those terms can and should include content standards. As long as the moderation policy is applied consistently and does not unlawfully discriminate, clubs are generally on solid legal ground.
